Stop Using: Upgrade Your French Vocabulary

“These basic words are not wrong. The problem is relying on them repeatedly. A B2 speaker chooses more precise words according to meaning and context.”

Synonyms are not always interchangeable, and a stronger word is not automatically a better word—the alternative must fit the context of the sentence. Learners should expand their active vocabulary gradually for natural lexical variety rather than forcing formal vocabulary into every sentence.

Speech recognition on this page compares recognized words to target sentences; it is a speech practice check rather than an official TEF score estimator.

Basic Sentence (Overused):
« C’est très difficile, mais c’est important. »
Improved Vocabulary:
« C’est particulièrement complexe; toutefois, c’est essentiel. »
More Natural & Developed Contextual Version:
« Cette démarche est particulièrement complexe; toutefois, elle reste essentielle pour réussir son intégration. »
Notice that the final version is stronger because it is both more precise in vocabulary and better developed with context.
