“These phrases help signal structure, nuance, development and lexical range. You do not need to use all 20 in one answer. Choose a small group, practise them until they become automatic, and gradually rotate in others.”
These 20 structural phrases support more structured spoken French and are especially useful when expressing, developing or qualifying an opinion. Some phrases are more formal than normal everyday conversation, so learners should use them naturally rather than forcing them into every answer.
Using one phrase does not automatically make an answer B2—the idea that follows the phrase still needs to be relevant and well-developed. This practice tool is designed as a learning aid, not an official TEF score estimator.
TEF Canada Section B Note
In Section B, remember that you are speaking to a friend and should retain the informal tu relationship throughout the conversation. These structural phrases can still be used where natural, but your overall response should remain conversational rather than sounding like a formal written essay.
